2018 marks the eleventh year of Turf Design Studio’s instrumental involvement in the design of Sydney’s Central Park, the landmark $2 billion, 5.8 hectare mixed-use urban village in Chippendale. DUO on Broadway, the final two towers at Sydney’s Central Park, is due for completion at the end of the year, and is being led by internationally acclaimed British architecture firm Foster + Partners.
Turf Design Studio, in collaboration with Danish firm Jeppe Aagaard Andersen, has designed more than 22,663 square metres of public open spaces for Central Park across twelve major public domain and building projects, including the award-winning Kensington Street precinct and One Central Park. Over the past decade, the collaboration has worked with world-leading architects from Sydney, London, Paris and Copenhagen.
Featuring two interconnected towers, DUO is prominently located on the corner of Broadway and Abercrombie Streets, completing the north-western area of the Central Park precinct. The mixed-use residential, commercial and hotel development surrounds the refurbished heritage-listed Australian Hotel and includes two 18-storey towers sitting on a combined five level basement car park.
The corner tower (Block 4N) comprises 5000 square metres of commercial space, a large childcare facility, a 300-room hotel with conference facilities, along with six floors of luxury residential apartments above. The western tower (Block 1) features 17 levels with 279 apartments, ranging from studio apartments to three bedrooms, with 9 retail units on the ground floor.
The two buildings are separated by a new pedestrian promenade lined with cafes and shops, connecting Broadway to Central Park Avenue and Chippendale Green – the 6400-square metre expansive public green space at the heart of Central Park.
Frasers Property Australia + Sekisui House commissioned Turf Design Studio and Jeppe Aagaard Andersen to design and collaborate on the public domain, communal open spaces, roof terraces, and perimeter planting to DUO’s building facades.
The roof top gardens and terraces are a key feature of the development, with the team establishing landscape principles and design concepts for all of DUO’s roof gardens and terraces, as well as the central communal atrium space on Level 11.
DUO’s planting design incorporates a diverse mix of species that reflect Chippendale’s eclectic local character and enhances the amenity and vibrancy of DUO’s open space. The western tower features an open void through the centre of the residential levels, providing a dramatic, naturally lit communal space.
DUO is on track to receive a five-star Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) rating, adding to Central Park’s reputation as one of Australia’s “greenest urban villages”, complete with its own onsite tri-generation power station and water recycling plant.
