A site of many places and many things to do

In April 2020, Turf with Cox Inall Ridgeway was engaged by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust to develop a new Concept Vision to guide future masterplanning and public improvement of Cockatoo Island/ Wareamah as a destination for the city. For the first time, this incorporated a connection to Country as a fundamental driver. The vision developed for each precinct was informed by the following principles:

1. Consistency with the legislated objects of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Act, 2001.

2. Precinct thinking with people at the core — life, spaces, then buildings.

3. An emphasis on strengthening interpretation of the site’s layered history, with an elevation of interpreting the First Nations heritage.

4. Leveraging the ‘Connecting with Country Draft Framework’ for developing connections with Country that will inform future planning, design and delivery.

5. Balanced future investment across a mix of public–realm and commercial activation, delivered over time and in partnership with other government agencies, commercial operators and community organisations.

6. Reflective of the NSW Public Spaces Charter, focusing on delivering a future vision through the following pathways: Reconnecting, Repairing, Repurposing and Renaturing.
