Transforming a large 19th century industrial railway workshop site in to a creative mixed use precinct

The Redfern North Eveleigh Precinct is part of a declared State Significant Precinct (SSP). The Concept Plan will deliver a mixed–use precinct, including new public spaces, residential, commercial, retail and cultural uses.

For over 150 years the site has been locked away as an industrial railway yard and carriage works. Turf worked with Bates Smart to plan new streets and public spaces, opening up the site to the local community and visitors.

Key elements of the rezoning proposal include:

  • Sets out around 27% of the subprecinct as dedicated public space (parks, squares and heritage open space).

  • Adds a large 8000 m2 multiuse public park and square at the centre of the site on Wilson Street with undercover and outdoor spaces, gardens, seats and retains the high value ‘Fan of Tracks’.

  • Delivers 57% public domain including all public spaces, new streets, laneways and pedestrian links.

  • Achieves 25.9% tree canopy and an overall greening coverage of 40% of the Paint Shop Sub–Precinct whilst retaining more than 90% of existing significant existing trees.

  • Establishes new DDA compliant links to Wilson Street, Little Eveleigh Street and Redfern Station.
