Shellharbour Civic Centre

Shellharbour, Australia

Project overview

Turf worked with architects Design Inc. andLacoste Stevenson to deliver a new civic centre for Shellharbour. The project consists of new civic, community and administrative facilities; including a city library, museum, civic auditorium, council chambers, community meeting rooms, new administration offices, and public domain.

A key element of the Civic Centre is a 2,000 m² ‘Civic Square’ — an external space that provides a generous frontage to the proposed new buildings, links the various building components together, and functions as an important civic space in its own right.

A placemaking process in collaboration with Place Partners established the early foundations of place investigation and understanding. A high level of collaboration with local Indigenous elders and artists has been key to the creation of a place that resonates with the community and is uniquely Shellharbour. The definition of what makes a good civic space is constantly evolving and changing. Successful civic spaces today are seen to often share a number of important characteristics.

“Shellharbour Civic Centre is a world-class, environmentally sustainable and welcoming public meeting place. The Civic Centre has become the beating heart of our city.”
